an amendment of the law, a ‘novel’ in law, a Norse law term used in the law after the introduction of a code of laws, when from time to time new amendments (novellae) were issued by the king; these were written as an appendix to the law code (and since then printed), and were, for the sake of distinction, called réttarbót, see 445 sqq, i. 257, 258: en er þetta spurðisk í annat fylki ok þriðja, hver réttarbót Þrændum var gefin, 84, ii. 18; hann hét þeim sinni vináttu ok réttarbót, 35; else the word does not occur in the old law.
